Poolish
The longer (and harder) version of the ‘short Channel loop’, this ride will have you booking your next trip to Tassie before you’ve even departed.
Whenever we head south, we know we’re going to hit a few hills… but with hills come stunning views… plus a stop at what we think is the best town and cafe in Southern Tasmania at Poolish & Co.
When we say this route has everything, we’re not kidding.
Route Overview
The Long Channel Loop is a southside staple — a full-day ride that rolls past postcard views of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Quiet backroads, rolling terrain, and a proper endurance challenge make this a must-do ride for those wanting to push a little further.
Ride Notes
Start in Kingston or Margate for a shorter option.
The Channel Highway can get busy during the summer months, however there is a gravel bike path on the side of the road for part of the trip down. Then it gets super quiet south of Kettering (past the Bruny ferry)
Optional lunch stop at Peppermint Bay or a bakery refuel in Cygnet.
We prefer riding this loop clockwise. We find it has the best flow. And in the windier months, you are more likely to have a tailwind on the way down, then sheltered from the wind in the hills on the way back.
Local Insight
This route is for those days when you need to ride, really ride. It’s long enough to find flow, challenging enough to keep you honest, and beautiful enough to make you forget you're working hard. A Tassie classic.
