A brilliant and varied long ride. A Hamilton loop heads into the Northern parts of Hobart and into New Norfolk, before heading deep into countryside, beautiful landscapes and often dry pasture.
Route Overview
This ride captures the expansive highland beauty of central Tasmania — from quiet country lanes to open farmlands, river crossings, and gravel climbs that deliver a true sense of escape. A big day in the saddle with even bigger views.
Ride Notes
Start and finish in New Norfolk for a shorter loop.
The gravel sections are super smooth and fine on a roadie.
Limited refuel options past New Norfolk — bring plenty of water and snacks.
Beautiful in Autumn due to the many birch trees scattered along the route.
Best ridden clockwise.
Sure, you could stick to the Lyell Highway and dodge the climb — but where’s the fun in that? The Collinsvale detour might make your legs work a little harder, but the views and quiet country roads make it totally worth the sweat. Trust us, it’s a scenic treat disguised as a hill.
Local Insight
This route gives you a feel for Tasmania’s vast, lesser-known interior. On a still day, it’s hard to believe you’re only an hour from Hobart. Best ridden with friends and a sense of adventure.
